Finnish Marine Industries commits to sustainability with ResponSea
Numerous leading companies of the industry have joined Finnish Marine Industries’ ResponSea sustainability campaign. The campaign has two common objectives: that the industry’s processes stress the environment and people as little as possible and that the campaign brings forth the industry’s actions to reduce marine transportation’s emissions
The significance of sustainability in business is increasing also in marine industry. The industry’s organization for co-operation and branch association for Technology Industries of Finland, Finnish Marine Industries accepts the challenge by establishing its own branch pledge, published today. The pledge has four themes:
- Reducing the environmental impact of marine transportation
- Marine industry’s companies’ continuous improvement as fair employers
- Monitoring the sustainability of the delivery chain
- Enhancing circular economy and lifecycle efficiency in all actions
“Finnish marine industry’s objective is to create sustainable maritime together for the future world”, says Elina Vähäheikkilä, Finnish Marine Industries’ Secretary General. “In the campaign we develop the sustainability of our products and our network together throughout the industry, and inform of the positive outcome our actions have on the society and the environment.” Co-operation in the industry is essential, as marine industry has a long supply chain. Sustainability of the product is a result of the entire network’s actions. Therefore, a common commitment can have a significant influence.
The following companies have already joined the campaign with their own commitments: Meyer Turku, Wärtsilä, Evac, Piikkiö Works, Turku Repair Yard, Promeco, NIT, Elomatic, Langh Tech, Almaco, ABB and Norsepower. For example, Meyer Turku has committed to reduce its carbon footprint by reducing energy consumption with 4 % by 2021 from the level in 2017. Norsepower reduces marine transportation’s fuel consumption and emissions by delivering rotor sails. Every rotor sail delivered reduces the target vessel fuel consumption with ~ 300 tons/year and carbon dioxide emissions with ~ 1 000 tons/year.
”The marine industry is diverse so it’s natural for the companies to implement sustainability in various ways. With a common commitment we wish to encourage the industry’s companies to develop their businesses in a sustainable way and to share good practices”, Vähäheikkilä states. Finnish Marine Industries is also a partner in SUSTIS II, a sustainability project financed by Business Finland.
