Study
Maritime professionals forge their careers on land as well as on the sea. Study programmes are offered on the secondary and tertiary levels all the way up to doctorates. Besides professionals with specific maritime expertise, career paths are also open in the sector for generic electrical engineering and ICT professionals. One great option is to complement studies in these fields with courses and modules in maritime studies.
Master's degree holders have excellent career opportunities both in Finland and abroad. Jobs are available at shipyards, design agencies, system and equipment manufacturers, classification societies, research institutes and shipping companies.
Finland has ten institutions offering maritime training and education, located throughout the country. Most study programmes can be applied for after completing secondary level education. The curricular content and application periods vary depending on the school and study programme.
The Finnish Maritime Cluster, together with Aalto University, have published a new brochure presenting the various schools that provide maritime training and education services. Have a look at the interactive brochure below:
The maritime industry needs professionals from various fields to maintain and design high-quality products and services. Employees in the maritime industry have usually studied in a vocational institute, at a university, or at a university of applied sciences.
Aalto University: Master Program in Maritime Engineering
The Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering is based on the expertise of the participating universities within naval architecture, offshore engineering and maritime engineering.
Aalto University’s study track in the programme focuses on passenger ships. This study track gives a comprehensive overview of the different aspects related to the design, analysis and optimisation of passenger ships. Studies cover both basic knowledge as well as the application of risk-assessment methods in ship design.
The aim of the studies is to work on a single ship project throughout the specialisation semester and work on different parts of this ship within different courses.
Graduates of the passenger ship study track are ideal recruits for shipyard design departments, design offices, classification societies, etc.
