NAPA Fleet Intelligence provides performance insights for Shin Kurushima Sanoyas Shipbuilding’s vessels in service

NAPA Fleet Intelligence analysis for data collected via the IoS-OP data center and Furuno Open Platform (FOP) will enhance future vessel and voyage optimization

NAPA Fleet Intelligence, a cloud-based platform for analyzing operational data, is being used to analyze data for a bulk carrier built by Shin Kurushima Sanoyas Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. The bulk carrier is the first vessel to use all aspects of ClassNK’s Internet of Ships Open Platform (IoS-OP), which provides the shipyard with essential insights into how its vessels are performing in real-world conditions. This high-level data analysis will further enable the shipyard to iterate and optimize future designs to increase the operational performance of its vessels.

Operational data of the vessel, which was built by Shin Kurushima Sanoyas Shipbuilding and is already in service, is collected onboard and sent onshore via the Furuno Open Platform from Furuno Electric Co. Ltd. The data is stored at the IoS-OP data center and analyzed using NAPA Fleet Intelligence. The resulting analysis is then shared with Shin Kurushima Sanoyas Shipbuilding, in line with IoS-OP’s rules, enabling the shipyard to monitor the performance of the ship in service. The vessel is the first to incorporate all elements of IoS-OP, the platform for the collection, distribution, and utilization of the operation data.

Naoki Mizutani, Managing Director of NAPA Japan said, “The ships being designed and built now will be at sea for decades to come. With emission reduction targets for 2030 and 2050 fast approaching, the application of real-life operational data to iterate and improve designs is critical to increasing the efficiency of the future fleet.”

“NAPA Fleet Intelligence uses a bank of real voyage data and combines this with NAPA 3D ship models to create uniquely powerful insights into vessel performance. This provides a shipyard with the unparalleled ability to analyze vessels once they have been deployed into real-life conditions and from there refine their design process.”

From shipping companies to shipbuilders and equipment and service suppliers, the IoS-OP consortium brings together many different companies throughout the maritime industry. The users of the IoS-OP platform can use NAPA’s expertise to analyze vessel and voyage performance with a high level of accuracy, either to reduce emissions and increase profitability or to research and validate new technologies.

NAPA Fleet Intelligence is being used in many other research projects to reduce emissions. Earlier this year, it was announced that NAPA Fleet Intelligence would be used in the Clean Propulsion Technologies consortium (CPT),  led by the University of Vaasa in Finland. This consortium aims to develop radically new low-carbon solutions across global transport sectors. NAPA will develop virtual models in collaboration with the consortium partners to improve the modeling of non-conventional propulsion unit arrangements and the inclusion of important onboard energy.
